Changes Coming to Social Security’s Online Services: What You Need to Know

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is making significant changes to the way you access its online services, including your personal my Social Security account. These changes aim to simplify the sign-in process while maintaining high security standards. Here’s what you need to know to ensure a smooth transition.

Why the Change?

The SSA is updating its online access methods to align with federal authentication standards. This change will help provide safer and more secure access to your Social Security information.

Key Updates:

  • Transition to Credential Service Providers (CSPs): In the near future, you’ll need to use an account with one of two CSPs – Login.gov or ID.me – to access your my Social Security account and other online services.
  • Current Accounts: If you created your my Social Security account before September 18, 2021, you can still use your existing username and password to sign in for now, but this option will soon be phased out.

What You Need to Do:

  1. Check Your Current Access: If you already have a Login.gov or ID.me account linked to your my Social Security account, you don’t need to take any further action.
  2. Create a Login.gov Account: If you don’t have a Login.gov account, it’s time to transition now to avoid disruptions:
    • Sign In: Use your existing Social Security username to sign in.
    • Follow Instructions: Follow the online instructions to create a new Login.gov account and link it to your my Social Security account.
    • Confirmation: Once linked, you’ll receive a confirmation screen and have immediate access to online services through Login.gov.
    • Future Sign-Ins: Moving forward, you’ll use your Login.gov account instead of your Social Security username.

Support and Assistance:

Login.gov offers 24/7 customer phone and chat support to assist with any questions or issues you may encounter during this transition.

Take Action Now:

To ensure uninterrupted access to your Social Security online services, we encourage you to transition to Login.gov or ID.me as soon as possible. The option to use your Social Security username will be phased out later this year, so making the switch now will help you avoid any inconvenience.
